In the Hand of Fate system, drawing cards from two randomized decks and subtracting one draw (black) from the other (red) is used to create a random number between -12 and +12 (inclusive). In this section, some meaning will be given to those random numbers, and to the numbers used for attributes.
Negative numbers resulting from a draw are considered botches. This means that the character whose action result is determined by this draw not only fails to accomplish what (s)he wanted, but actually does the opposite. If trying to fix a car, the character breaks it worse than before. If trying to attack a foe, then that foe gains an advantage inst

The Deck
- Each major character has a deck, which is a 54-card deck of playing cards.
- Card draws provide the random numbers for action resolution.
- The jokers are set aside and the red and black cards are separated into two randomized piles.
- Each action calls for one red card (providing a positive number) and one black card (a negative number) to be drawn and revealed. Add these two together to determine the action result.
- The number cards are their values, Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13, Ace = 14.
- Jokers act as trump cards but are only used in the case of magical, or other powerful and beyond-mortal, effects.

In the Mythos universe, there are several major interstellar powers, and a few minor ones. Many major government has a representative on the Galactic Council, a diplomatic body formed by the Hoverian Accords to arbitrate between the major powers. Only the Tennerellor Cult, a minor group which is not a signatory of the Accords, is aware of the Spirit Forge and the changes it is about to wreak on the galaxy, and far beyond it.
